I n a world where fast fashion is on the rise, it is only natural for one to have a larger wardrobe than needed –perhaps overflowing to the point that the sight of its mess can give you a headache rather than bring joy. Knowing when and how to declutter your wardrobe is, thus, an important skill to have.

Not only does it help organize a seemingly impossible mess into an aesthetic assortment of clothing articles, but it can also create space for more of your shopping escapades, as well as potentially benefit someone who may not have money to buy themselves any clothes at all (should you choose to pass down some of yours to them).

While there is no hard and fast rule on how one should go about the decluttering process, we have a few tips in store for you to help you navigate the journey:

It may sound counterintuitive, but it’s true. In order to declutter a mess, you first need to recognize it as clutter –after all, why would you need to declutter something that’s not already cluttered? It can be difficult to make peace with the fact that there are things in your life (or maybe just your wardrobe) that need fixing, though acknowledging this is the first step in doing the work of fixing it!

Clutter For A Declutter

Typically, one of the first things you should do while decluttering your wardrobe is to take the entire cluster of articles out of the closets, and spread it on a large surface area nearby, so that you can grapple with the extent of the mess. The closer this space is to your wardrobe, the shorter and more convenient performing this task will be as you won’t have to waste time transporting items from that space back into your wardrobe once you are done decluttering.

Such a space will probably be your room. Make sure to clean and empty out your room beforehand, as far as possible, so that your wardrobe’s mess won’t end up gelling in with the general mess of your room.

Assort Into Categories

Once you have spread out all your wardrobe items on the floor, it may be helpful to categorize everything according to what makes the most sense. These categories can be made along the lines of clothes pertaining to different seasons, different styles (e.g., formal, casual, party-wear), different colors, different time periods of possession, or even your most-to-least favorites! In fact, if you want to be extra organized, you can make use of multiple of these categorizing techniques.

Once this is done, you can place the out-of-season clothes in storage bags and put them away for good –at least for a few months. Tada! Your clutter will have already reduced significantly thanks to this. To further shrink it, you can think about what you would like to do with your least favorite items.

It is possible that you may think of an item as a non-favorite, or be unsure of how much you like or dislike it. You might have not worn it enough times to have a conclusive opinion on it. In that case, you may want to pick all such articles out and don yourself in each of them for some hours over the next few days, to see whether or not –and to what extent– you like them. The clothes you are sure you don’t like wearing can be donated to other people in need.

Clean Your Wardrobe

When you are putting so much effort and time into organizing your wardrobe clutter, it is important to ensure that the insides of your wardrobe are clean before you put everything back in there again. Using a damp cloth, clean any dust that may have accumulated there over time, and reorganize the hangers to ensure that any broken ones don’t end up ruining your upcoming arrangement.

It’s Restock Time!

Congratulations! You’ve made it through the oft anxiety-inducing process of decluttering your wardrobe! Now it’s time to neatly put everything back in its place to give your wardrobe the fresh look it had been longing for. Place your nimbly folded stacks of assorted clothes in your wardrobe one by one, with the articles you wear most often and/or will need to use soon at the front. Any small items like socks and undergarments can be stored in a separate box or drawer within the closet.

Conclusion

It isn’t always easy to declutter, especially if you struggle to let go of things you’ve held onto for some time. Asking your kith and kin for assistance in this process can, hence, help make it less stressful and more fun for you.

The good news is, once you have figured out how to declutter your wardrobe, managing it will be a piece of cake for you in the times to come if you do the upkeep every few weeks. Perhaps, thinking about not giving in to the urge of consuming fast fashion can be the final step in leading a sustainable life free of clutters.
